Major Clinical Project and Presentation

A. Choose a population at your field practicum site in need of clinical intervention. Specifically, a population whose problems may lead to a mental illness(es). For example, victims of rape or domestic violence may suffer from Post‐Traumatic Stress Disorder, Major Depressive Disorder and other mental illnesses. The disorder(s) must be congruent with disorders in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.

B .Identify the scope of the problem and demographic information about the population.

C. Identify any systemic structures and values within the culture that may exacerbate the problem within the population (marginalization or alienation) or serve to help mitigate the problem (privilege and power).

D .Identify your theoretical approach or practice perspective when assessing this population; specifically, empowerment theory, strengths approach, the life model, systems theory, Afrocentric/Africentric.

E. Identify an assessment tool or instrument that may be used with this population, and explain how the assessment tool(s) is used. For example, Domestic Violence Assessment/Instrument, Substance Abuse Assessment/Instrument, Trauma Assessment/Instrument, Risk Assessment, Functional Age Assessment, Assessment Instruments used during a Psychosexual Evaluation and more.

G. Identify any ethical concerns that may emerge when working with this population. For example, identify your personal bias if you working with incarcerated individuals that may have committed crimes that are in direct opposition to your values. Specifically, how would you address your bias?

H. Identify any cultural factors, interpersonal dynamics or contextual factors that may influence the therapeutic relationship; strengthen and/or threaten therapeutic alliance. I. What public policies influence this population and/or the problem?

J .Identify and discuss additional treatment concerns that may emerge when working with this population. For instance, some batterers may also suffer from a substance abuse problem. Describe how would you address the battering in addition to the substance abuse problem

K. Describe evidence‐based treatment approaches with this population, and how the intervention is evaluated to determine its effectiveness. For example, individual therapy coupled with enrollment in an Alcoholics Anonymous group may be more effective than individual therapy exclusively with an individual suffering from substance abuse.
